BNSF Public Rate Retrieval Help

Table of Contents

General Rate Retrieval Information

The Rate Retrieval information system provides internet access to BNSF public rates, seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

Two interfaces for Rate Retrieval are provided, one for carload rates, the other for intermodal rates. Both are quick and simple to use. After entering the required search criteria, a list of public rates that meet the selection criteria will be displayed.

Always check price authority documents for applicable rules and conditions. Prices are subject to change. Inquiry into the Internet Rate Retrieval System will not be considered a formal request for rate information.

Searching for Public Carload Rates

Retrieving carload rates takes only a few easy steps. Start by entering the origin, destination, and commodity code. Next, press the 'Validate Request' button with your mouse. A second 'enhanced' entry screen will appear. This screen provides you with additional geography and/or STCC support and help. Make any needed enhancements to your query on this screen, and press the 'Retrieve Rates' button with your mouse. Your rate request response will appear on the next screen. Details of each step, along with navigation tips are described below.

Geography (City/Station Spelling Help)

Start by entering the origin city and state information. Then do the same for the destination city and state.

If you are not sure of the correct city spelling, you can enter the first and second letters of the city name (enter more if you can) and enter the two letter abbreviation for the state or province at the right. Enter the STCC code number or a commodity keyword (see commodity instructions below) and then press the 'Validate Request' button with your mouse. After a short pause, a modified version of this input screen will appear. This new 'enhanced' entry screen will contain a dropdown entry box for the origin and destination cites. Use the dropdown entry boxes to select the correct origin and destination cites, if needed. Make your choice for STCC number, if needed, and then press the 'Retrieve Rates' button with your mouse. Your rate request response will appear on the next screen.

Commodity STCC number

There are two methods for selecting a commodity:

1. If you know the STCC (Standard Transportation Commodity Code) code number: enter the full 5 or 7 digit STCC Code. Leave out any hyphens in the number as you enter it. Example 46111 or 4611110 .

If you enter a 7 digit STCC number, and some BNSF public rates are published as 5 digit STCC, our rate retrieval system will return all of the rates that match at a 5 digit level. Example: if 1421110 for AG Limestone is entered, the system will return rates published as 14211. Conversely, if you enter a 5 digit STCC code number, and some BNSF public rates are published as 7 digit STCC, our rate retrieval system will return all of the rates that match at a 7 digit level.

2. If you do not know the STCC code number: enter one 'keyword' that is likely to be found in the commodity description. For example, use the word 'steel' or 'pipe' as a 'keyword' if you are seeking BNSF rates for shipping 'steel pipe'. Then press the 'Validate Request' button with your mouse. After a short pause, a modified version of this input screen will appear. This new 'enhanced' entry screen will contain a dropdown entry box of all commodity descriptions that contained your 'keyword'. Next to all the commodity descriptions in the dropdown box are the STCC codes associated with them. Select from this list your commodity choice if necessary, and then press the 'Retrieve Rates' button with your mouse. Your rate request response will appear on the next screen.

New Queries

A RESET button is located at the bottom of the first query screen. If you wish to start over with your query, it will clear all entered query parameters on this screen.

If you are viewing query results and want to run another query, without retaining the present query parameters, you may press the 'New Search' button near the upper left corner of the results page. This will generate a new copy of the first query page with all the entry fields blank. If you are viewing query results and want to run another query, but want to retain most of the original query parameters, use the BACK button on your browser to navigate from your results page back to the first query screen. Once back to the original query page, you can change some or all parameters for the next query.

Navigation on the Query Screen

The mouse will navigate you between all web page entry fields with all browsers. However, the use of your TAB, ENTER, and UP/DOWN keys to move between entry fields will very according to the Internet browser and version you are using. In version 4.0+ of Netscape or Microsoft's web browsers, the TAB key will move you from one entry field to the next on the query screen. Some older browsers will not respond to either the TAB or the UP/DOWN keys, in which case you must use the mouse.

Searching for Public Intermodal Rates

Retrieving intermodal rates is also quick and easy. You only need to select the Origin and/or Destination Hub Center. Next, press the 'Retrieve Rates' button with your mouse. Your rate request response will appear on the next screen. Intermodal has several optional rate selection parameters that you may utilize.

Hub Centers

There are 40 Hub Centers to select from in both the origin and the destination dropbox.

You must make a selection from an Origin and/or Destination Hub Center. Then press the RETRIEVE RATES button with your mouse. Your rate request response will appear on the next screen.

Five optional query parameters are available. They are: Rate Authority, Domestic/International, Service Level, Service Code, and Equipment. You may use none or all of these optional parameters. If you do not use these optional parameters, your query response will return all rates based on the Hub Center(s).

New Queries

A 'Reset' button is located at the button of the query screen. If you wish to start over with your query, the 'Reset' button will clear all entered query parameters on this screen.

If you are viewing query results and want to run another query, without retaining the present query parameters, you may press the 'New Search' button near the upper left corner of the results page. This will generate a new copy of the first query page with all the entry fields blank. If you are viewing query results and want to run another query, but want to retain most of the original query parameters, use the BACK button on your browser to navigate from your results page back to the query screen. Once back to the query page, you can change some or all parameters for the next query.

In version 4.0+ of Netscape or Microsoft's web browsers, the TAB key will move you from one entry field to the next on the query screen. Some older browsers will not respond to either the TAB or the UP/DOWN keys, in which case you must use the mouse.

Query Results

The results show any public rate(s) that meet your query criteria. The Rate Retrieval system will return the details of up to ten rates at a time. If more than ten rates exist, a More Rates button is provided to display the next ten rates. If no rates are found that matched the query parameters, a message will display that "No BNSF Public Rates were found that matched your query".

Rules & Conditions

Due to space limitations, not all rules and conditions for a rate are displayed on the query results page. Always check the full text of the rate authority document, and review all rules and price conditions. Use the 'Price Conditions' button to view all of the price conditions for the rate. To return from the Price Conditions screen to the Query Results page press the  'Back' button on your internet browser.

Dates

All rates with an effective date of the query request date (or any future date) will be stated in the query results. The expiration date of 12/31/9999 is used as a technical place holder when there is no specified expiration date; it does not mean the rate will never be expired. If the rate is scheduled to expire, a date will be stated. All public rates are subject to change.
