In general, positions within Operations fall within three major groups: transportation, engineering and mechanical.

Each of these areas provides a logical succession of occupations that build on experiences gained throughout the railroad:

  • BNSF has many scheduled (union-represented) positions for skilled laborers or technicians, with individual tasks and responsibilities
  • Non-supervisory management positions have additional authority and responsibility for key functions and activities
  • First-line supervisors have responsibilities for both the activities of a work group and for the employees who comprise that group
  • Middle management positions draw on experience gained in first-line leadership to guide larger numbers of work groups
  • Senior management provides strategic direction to the entire team of employees in the transportation, engineering or mechanical group
