Engineering
The Engineering Department is responsible for planning and directing inspection, construction, maintenance and repair for the following groups:
- Track – 32,500 miles of track infrastructure
- Signal – railroad electronic equipment
- Structures – bridges, buildings and other railroad property and facilities
These supervisors ensure the best utilization of personnel and material for a safe and cost efficient operation at maximum production. Work in the Engineering Department is a 24/7 field environment including nights, weekends, evenings and holidays, on call or available for emergency situations. Employees work both indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
The Engineering Department is approximately 10,000 employees strong.
Engineering Management Trainee Overview
Location
Any location across the BNSF System. BNSF is located in the 28 most western states.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Help plan and direct the construction and repair of railroad trackage, electronic signaling devices, telecommunications equipment and other related structures
- Help plan and schedule improvement and maintenance programs
- Identify and test new technology to improve maintenance procedures and extend asset life.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Industrial, Civil or Electrical Engineering or Construction Management
- Must have strong leadership skills with excellent oral and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous Operations internship experience
Working Conditions
- Office and field environment
- Hours are irregular with a minimum of 40 hours per week.
- 24/7 Operation; night, weekend and holiday work required.
