Accounting/Finance

BNSF's Finance department is made up of over 600 employees primarily located at our Ft. Worth, Texas headquarters and offices in Topeka, Kansas and St. Paul, Minnesota. The department has responsibility for accounting, treasury, tax, risk management, financial planning and analysis functions along with a number of other specialized areas. The Finance department's goal is to improve, enhance and support BNSF's performance by providing world-class financial services and innovative strategic solutions to our business partners within the company. We do this by:

BNSF has a wide range of accounting and finance groups. Below is a list of most of the groups and ideal skills or abilities of successful applicants.

  • Financial Reporting and Accounting
    • Possible duties and responsibilities:

      General accounting

      Monthly accounting closes

      Internal and external financial reporting

    • Important skills/background:

      Accounting or Finance degree and work experience

      CPA certification and/or MBA degree

  • Financial Planning and Forecasting
    • Possible duties and responsibilities:

      Annual and strategic financial planning

      Income and cash flow forecasting

      Capital project planning, capital expenditure reporting and analysis

      Development of annual and monthly budgets in partnership with field personnel

      Economic and financial analysis

    • Important skills/background:

      Accounting or Finance degree and work experience

      CPA certification and/or MBA degree

  • Production Accounting
    • Possible duties and responsibilities:

      Managing contractual agreements

      Invoicing customers for freight bills and other related services

      Collection of receivables and resolution of claims/disputes

      Payroll operations (issuing paychecks, auditing timekeeping records, etc.)

      Equipment per diem accounting

      Accounts Payable

    • Important skills/background:

      Accounting or Finance degree and work experience

      Contract interpretation / Dispute resolution / Customer service experience

  • Finance and Treasury
    • Possible duties and responsibilities:

      Cash management, including determining daily cash position and cash forecasts

      Net Present Value analysis to support financing and hedging decisions

      Monitor and execute investment strategy for employee benefit plans

      Manage company relationships with banks and rating agencies

      Execute financing transactions in the capital markets

    • Important skills/background:

      Accounting or Finance degree and work experience

      CPA certification and/or MBA degree

  • Risk Management
    • Possible duties and responsibilities:

      Quantitative and qualitative risk analysis

      Oversee and execute BNSF's fuel hedging program

      Act as liaison between BNSF's claim department and the company's insurance carriers

      Negotiate insurance and indemnity provisions with third parties

    • Important skills/background:

      Accounting or Finance degree and work experience

      CPA certification and/or MBA degree

  • Measurement and Profitability
    • Possible duties and responsibilities:

      Analyze measures and trends involving train performance and statistics

      Responsibility for internal cost and profitability systems

      Furnishing cost data for marketing new and existing product and service offerings

    • Important skills/background:

      Accounting or Finance degree and work experience

      Systems/IT experience

      CPA certification and/or MBA degree

  • Tax Department
    • Possible duties and responsibilities:

      Preparation of federal and state tax returns, including income, property, sales/use and excise tax returns

      Accounting for income taxes

      Federal and state tax audits/tax litigation

      Tax planning/transactional analysis

      Federal and state tax legislative activities

    • Important skills/background:

      Accounting, Finance or Law degree and work experience

      CPA certification, Masters in Taxation and/or LLM degree
