Construction - Structural Maintenance Bridge and Building
Overview: This position is responsible for the construction, maintenance and repair of railroad bridges and company buildings.
Safety: Comply with company and federal safety rules, policies and procedures to include wearing required safety equipment, responding to safety concerns and taking appropriate action.
Structural Maintenance: Construct and/or maintain culverts and tunnels, steel and timber railroad track bridges as well as company structures and buildings. Duties include, but not limited to: paint, frame, install bridge timbers and pile drives. Work may include cabinetry, masonry, remodeling, roofing, welding, cement and carpentry work. Read and understand building plans or sketches.
Equipment Operation: Operate trucks in excess of 26,000 pounds, as required.
Bridge Tender: (Depending on location) Operate and maintain railroad drawbridges. Requires communication by telephone, two way radio and hand signal, lifting or swinging of drawbridges for safe passage of vessels or trains.
Salary/Benefits: Pay rate is approximately $19.70 per hour. BNSF employees receive an annual benefit package valued at $22,000. The terms of the collective bargaining agreement shall apply.
- 18 years of age or older.
- High School diploma or GED.

- Willing to submit to an employment, criminal and driving background review.
- Available to work in the geographic area indicated.
- Able to read, write and communicate (speak, hear and understand) English.
- Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet).
- Available to work a 40 hour work week subject to overtime, on-call and alternate shifts that may include weeknights, weekends and holidays.
- Available to travel to job sites around the seniority (designated) region and remain on site for extended periods, sometimes days or weeks at a time.
- Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.
- Possess a valid state-issued driver's license, or be able to obtain one within 60 days of employment.
- Able to visually distinguish among red, blue, green and yellow colors.
- Able to use hands to perform activities involving holding, grasping, turning and pulling.
- Able to perform work on uneven surfaces; frequently climb ladders and on/off equipment as well as perform scaffolding while suspended from a bridge.
- Able to work in conditions that include loud noise and fumes, work on and around heavy and moving machinery, bend, lift, work, walk, stand and sit in confined spaces for extended periods of time and use hand and power tools.
- Follow safety policies and procedures and wear the required personal protective equipment required for the job in a safe manner.
Probationary Period
60 days.
Training
Company paid on-the-job training is provided.
Work Conditions
Extreme all-weather conditions; un-even surfaces; safety sensitive work environment.
Travel
Frequent and extensive travel over a large geographic area.
Shifts/Hours
Work weeks are 40 hours per week. Typically, shifts are weekdays, Monday through Friday. May be subject to on-call, overtime, weekends and holidays.

Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
Dues
Per the collective bargaining agreement, union membership and monthly dues are required.
