Truck Driver - Track Maintenance
Overview: This position is responsible for (1) transportation of the crew and the equipment to and from the jobsite location; (2) maintenance of the track infrastructure to include: construction, inspection and repair of the track, and other railroad properties and facilities; (3) operation of the equipment used in these tasks, and, in some cases, maintenance of the equipment; (4) travel and work within assigned geographic area.
Safety: Comply with company and federal safety rules, policies and procedures to include wearing required safety equipment, responding to safety concerns and taking appropriate action.
Truck Driver: Operate trucks in excess of 26,000 pounds as required.
Track Maintenance Repair and Installation: Repair and rebuild railroad track, using power and non-power hand tools as necessary. Lift and carry track material, cut brush, trees and vegetation, and clear the right-of-way of litter and cargo spillage. Maintenance will be performed by pulling spikes from ties, drilling holes through rails for insertion of bolts, and fastening, tightening or loosening bolts.
Maintain Trackbed: Cut rail, manually compress ballast, remove and install ties, lift, roll, and adjust rails, and lift and carry track material with assistance.
Operate Equipment: Remove and replace ballast, operate large non-powered hand tools such as shovels, picks, axes, cutters, and sledgehammers, and operate proper electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic hand tools such as drills, impact wrenches, jacks, power saws, and grinders.
Salary/Benefits: Pay rate is approximately $20.30 per hour. Employees receive an annual benefit package valued at $22,000. The terms of the collective bargaining agreement shall apply.
- 21 years of age or older.
- High School diploma or GED.

- Able to read, write and communicate (speak, hear and understand) in English.
- Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet).
- Available to work a 40 hour work week subject to overtime, on-call and alternate shifts that may include weeknights, weekends and holidays.
- Available to travel to job sites around the seniority (designated) region and remain on site for extended periods, sometimes days or weeks at a time.
- Able to lift and carry up to 60 pounds frequently.
- Possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with HAZMAT and air brake endorsements, or be able to obtain one within 60 days of employment.
- Able to visually distinguish among red, blue, green and yellow colors, hear, and with training, distinguish auditory signals.
- Able to use hands to perform activities involving holding, grasping, turning and pulling.
- Able to perform work on uneven surfaces; frequently climb on/off equipment.
- Able to work in conditions that include loud noise and fumes, work on and around heavy and moving machinery, bend, walk, stand and sit for extended periods of time and use hand tools.
- Follow safety policies and procedures and wear the required personal protective equipment required for the job in a safe manner.
Probationary Period
60 days.
Training
Company paid on the job training including preparation, equipment and testing expenses to obtain Commercial Drivers License is provided.
Work Conditions
Extreme all-weather conditions; un-even surfaces; safety sensitive work environment.
Travel
Frequent and extensive travel over a large geographic area.
Shifts/Hours
Work weeks are 40 hours per week. Typically, shifts are weekdays, Monday through Friday. May be subject to on-call, overtime, weekends and holidays.
Seniority District / Transfers
Based on the bargaining agreement, transfers are based on seniority and require the approval of the Superintendent of the department.
Relocation
Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
Dues
Per the collective bargaining agreement, union membership and monthly dues are required.
