Pipefitter / Sheet Metal Worker
Overview: This position is responsible for inspecting and properly repairing the plumbing of locomotive systems to include air brake, exhaust system, lube oil, cooling water, air compressor, radiators, and fuel systems.
Safety: Comply with company and federal safety rules, policies and procedures to include wearing required safety equipment, responding to safety concerns and taking appropriate action. May be required to handle hazardous materials.
Fabrication: Fabricate, cut, shape, and modify items utilizing various methods (e.g. seaming, riveting, brazing, or welding). Utilize pipe threaders, pipe bending, pipe coupling, sheet metal brakes, shears, snaps, metal cutting saws, drills, wire feed welders, oxygen/acetylene cutting torches and repair various components of locomotives.
Inspection and Repair: Inspect and properly repair piping on the following systems on locomotives: air brakes, exhaust system, lube oil, cooling water, air compressor, radiator, and fuel system. Install, disassemble, assemble, repair, or replace locomotive and diesel engine components as required.
Salary/Benefits: Journeyman pay rate is approximately $25.10 per hour. Apprentice pay rate is approximately $21.08 per hour. Journeyman status is commensurate with 4 years of related experience and/or training or a current journeyman card. Employees receive an annual benefit package valued at $22,000. The terms of the collective bargaining agreement shall apply.
- 18 years of age or older.
- High School diploma or GED.
- Willing to submit to an employment, criminal and driving background review.
- Available to work in the geographic area indicated.
- Able to read, write and communicate (speak, hear and understand) English.
- Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet).
- Work a 40 hour work week. Shifts are governed by union agreement and subject to seniority. Mechanical shops operate 24 hours per day, 7 days per week with three 8-hour shifts including weekends, holidays and overtime. Available to work any of these shifts as required.
- Able to lift and carry up to 75 pounds with or without assistance.
- Able to visually distinguish among red, blue, green and yellow colors, hear, and with training, distinguish auditory signals.
- Able to use hands to perform activities involving holding, grasping, turning and pulling.
- Able to perform work on uneven surfaces, frequently climbing on/off equipment.
- Able to work in conditions that include loud noise and fumes, work on and around heavy and moving machinery, bend, walk, stand and sit for extended periods of time and use hand tools.
- Follow safety policies and procedures and wear the required personal protective equipment required for the job in a safe manner.
Probationary Period
60 days.
Training
Company paid on-the-job training is provided.
Work Conditions
Extreme all-weather conditions; un-even surfaces; safety sensitive work environment.
Travel
Minimal.
Shifts/Hours
Mechanical shops operate 24 hours per day, 7 days per week with three 8-hour shifts including weekends, holidays and overtime. Work weeks are 40 hours per week, shifts are governed by union agreement and subject to seniority.
Relocation
Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
Dues
Per the collective bargaining agreement, union membership and monthly dues are required.
