Machinist (Tool & Die)

Overview: This position is responsible for the production of freight car wheel sets using machine tools and presses. Use and maintain machine shop gauging equipment to inspect and qualify various freight car wheel components.

Safety: Comply with company and federal safety rules, policies and procedures to include wearing required safety equipment, responding to safety concerns and taking appropriate action. May be required to handle hazardous materials.

Wheel & Equipment Maintenance: Recondition and re-profile axles and wheels using CNC lathes. Operate various presses for application of parts and removing various components of freight car wheels. Use gauges and micrometers to ensure freight car wheel components are within specifications. Use various powered hand tools to include grinders and buffers. Troubleshoot, repair and maintain machine shop tools and equipment and diagnose/repair hydraulic, air and other mechanical problems.

Inspection: Inspect and qualify components of freight car wheel sets including wheels, axles and bearings, and shop equipment to include tools, cranes and machines.

Salary/Benefits: Pay rate is approximately $25.10 per hour. Journeyman status is commensurate with 4 years of related experience and/or training or a current journeyman card. Employees receive an annual benefit package valued at $22,000. The terms of the collective bargaining agreement shall apply.

  • 18 years of age or older.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Willing to submit to an employment, criminal and driving background review.
  • Available to work in the geographic area indicated.
  • Able to read, write and communicate (speak, hear and understand) English.
  • Able to work outdoors in extreme all conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet).
  • Work a 40 hour work week. Shifts are governed by union agreement and subject to seniority. Mechanical shops operate 24 hours per day, 7 days per week with three 8-hour shifts including weekends, holidays and overtime. Available to work any of these shifts as required.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.
  • Possess a valid state-issued driver's license, or be able to obtain one within 60 days of employment.
  • Able to visually distinguish among red, blue, green and yellow colors, hear, and with training, distinguish auditory signals.
  • A minimum of 4 years of verifiable mechanical work experience or training.
  • Able to use hands to perform activities involving holding, grasping, turning and pulling.
  • Able to perform work on uneven surfaces; frequently climb ladders and on/off equipment, and work at various heights including making repairs on top of a locomotive.
  • Able to work in conditions that include loud noise and fumes, work on and around heavy and moving machinery, bend, walk, stand and sit for extended periods of time and use hand tools.
  • Follow safety policies and procedures and wear the required personal protective equipment required for the job in a safe manner.

Training

Company paid on-the-job training is provided.

Shifts/Hours

Mechanical shops operate 24 hours per day, 7 days per week with three 8-hour shifts including weekends, holidays and overtime. Work weeks are 40 hours per week, shifts are governed by union agreement and subject to seniority.

Dues

Per the collective bargaining agreement, union membership and monthly dues are required.
