BNSF Holiday Express Spreads Joy

2010-12-13

The BNSF Holiday Express train completed its 10-day journey through the Pacific Northwest on Friday, Dec. 10, in Klamath Falls, Ore., where 350 people, including military service men and women and their families, boarded the train for a memorable ride with Santa Claus.

It was the third annual trip for the Holiday Express, which pays tribute to members of the military and their families. It began on Dec. 1 in Hauser, Idaho, before moving on to stops in Washington state and Oregon.

During 11 trips, including a community-relations trip in Vancouver, Wash., the train carried more than 3,000 riders. Each one received a special commemorative ornament from Santa while being served hot chocolate and other treats.

"This is a wonderful experience for our families during the holidays" said Lt. Col. Carol Seger, of the Washington State National Guard. "To offer families a chance to be together and relax on this wonderful train and visit with Santa is special. BNSF is helping create memories that these families will cherish for a long time."

In Washington state, BNSF received the Seven Seals Award, the highest national award possible for employer recognition in terms of military support. The award is from the Employer Support of The Guard and Reserve, a national organization.

Following several military rides, the BNSF Foundation donated $10,000 each to local military family support organizations. In all, the foundation donated $90,000. The presentation was followed by a special dinner on board the train for area political, civic and military leaders.

In each state, the trip took on special meaning for National Guard and Army Reserve units that have been under multiple deployments. In Idaho, for example, virtually the entire state's National Guard unit was deployed to Iraq. On board were the children and spouses of loved ones serving abroad. After the trip, BNSF posted more than 200 photographs of the ride on line. The Idaho National Guard e-mailed the link to the troops in Iraq so they could see pictures of their families within hours of the train ride.

As this letter from the Garrison Commander of the Idaho National Guard unit in Iraq points out, the leadership of the Guard and Reserve units serving abroad greatly appreciated the tribute to their service and the sacrifices of the families at home:

BNSF,

Merry Christmas from Iraq. I would just like to send you a brief note of thanks from the soldiers of the 116th CBCT for your support. I realize this is something that Burlington Northern Santa Fe didn't have to do, but wanted to do, for all those that serve. The support that we have received from the employers and citizens back home is tremendous and greatly appreciated.

Thank you for helping take care of my soldiers and their families, especially during the holiday season. Your support back home makes it easier for my soldiers to focus on the task at hand and not worry about their loved ones. Without your support we could not be doing what we are today. Thanks again Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
