Employee's Community Spirit Brings Recognition

2010-01-04

Vince Castro is a machine operator at the Pico Rivera, Calif., facility by day.

But during the evenings, Castro is a role model for volunteerism in his hometown of Colton, Calif. Castro on Dec. 5 served as the elected grand marshal of the Colton Christmas Parade, only a couple of months after being elected Citizen of the Year.

Receiving the honors surprised Castro, who said he hasn't received recognition or even a pat on the back during the many years he's been a volunteer. But he also is quick to point out that he doesn't volunteer to receive recognition.

"I enjoy doing things for the community," Castro said.

His community volunteerism started when his son, at the age of 5, decided he wanted to play soccer. Castro attended practice with his son, and he soon found himself volunteering as a coach and on the board of directors for youth soccer. He has also served on the boards of the local Little League, Pony League baseball and Ronald McDonald House.

"When I found out the soccer league was several thousand dollars in the red, I offered to try to help get finances in order," Castro said. "The following year, the league had gone from being in debt to having $10,000 in the bank."

Word spread from there, and Castro at one time found himself serving on three different local boards. Castro helped with fundraising for the Explorer program operated through Colton police and fire departments. He also helped with fundraising for the local football league, band boosters and girls' softball league.

Most recently, Castro has been involved as the American Cancer Society Relay for Life Committee. He's served as team captain, co-chair and, most recently, as event chair.

Castro isn't planning to slow down any time soon. These days, he's coaching again: his grandson's tee-ball team and his granddaughter's soccer team.
