Peak Perfection Achieved

2010-01-11

BNSF employees achieved their goal of perfection: zero service failures during the 27-day UPS Peak Season during the holidays.

And the momentum continued post-Christmas. Last week, the streak of failure-free service days peaked at 55 consecutive days.

During that time, BNSF employees met -- and overcame -- several challenges in achieving a perfect Peak Season.

  • A major winter storm blanketed the region from Denver to St. Paul, Minn. Highways were closed, and some additional UPS business that would have been handled by truck was diverted to rail. Employees took the increase of freight in stride and made sure the transfers were handled safely and carefully - and on time.
  • A hot train on the North line had two separate locomotive incidents at Devon, Mont., and Wenatchee, Wash., which led to the train being four hours behind schedule. Employees were able to safely make up the time and get freight delivered on time to UPS.
  • The need for repairs to one car resulted in a train returning to Hobart Yard in Los Angeles, causing the train to be delayed for three hours and 30 minutes. The car was repaired, but employees again safely and efficiently found ways to move freight on time for UPS.

"Working closely with UPS, we were able to overcome obstacles to deliver all loads to their destination without exception," said Jim Gordon, director of Sales, UPS account. "I'm proud of how the BNSF team -- from dispatchers to locomotive engineers and conductors and everyone in between -- worked together to uphold our vision of consistently meeting our customers' expectations."

Peak Season may be over, but BNSF employees will continue with exceptional preparation, dedication and task execution to put customers first -- and to meet their expectations.
