Employee Helps Injured Children Involved in Accident
2010-07-08
Monte Hazen, a gang trackman, was looking forward to a nice weekend and trying to beat the rain home.
He had just left Douglas, Wyo., when the rain began falling hard. As he neared Glendo, Wyo., a woman in a car with her two daughters started to pass his vehicle. To Hazen's dismay, the woman's car began to hydroplane, spinning into the guard rail and flipping over into the median.
One of the girls flew out of the car, and Hazen pulled over as quickly as he safely could and went back to help. By that time, both girls were out of the car, and the older of the two girls was leaning over her younger sister.
"I asked if she was OK," Hazen said. "She said she thought she was OK, but she was worried about her sister."
The younger girl was unconscious, but Hazen found a pulse and verified that she was breathing. So he got down on the ground with the girls, held the injured girl's head to help keep her still, and kept talking to her until she regained consciousness. Hazen had some dry clothes in his car, so he pulled those out to help keep the two girls and their mother warm.
Hazen is quick to point out that he isn't a hero. "I just did what I could to help until the paramedics arrived," he said.
The fact that Hazen stopped to help didn't surprise his co-workers.
It's people like Monte that you hope are close by if and when you should ever need help," said Kristy DelGado, a machine operator and co-worker.
