Topeka Locomotive Shops Opens Doors

2011-09-12

More than 5,000 people showed up for a rare peek inside the Topeka Locomotive Shops during a special open house on Labor Day.

The event was designed to showcase the railroad's long history in Kansas as the state celebrates its sesquicentennial. It also allowed the public to see inside the shop on the northeast side of downtown Topeka.

"We drive by these buildings all the time and wonder what goes on in there," said Preston Taylor of Topeka. "It's great to see that all this work for the railroad happens here in our city. I know lots of communities would love to have this kind of business employing its citizens. It makes me appreciate what this place means to Topeka, and it is fitting that the shops are open on Labor Day."

The open house took place at the massive locomotive repair facility where visitors were able to view locomotives in various stages of repair. For some it was an opportunity of a lifetime to climb into the cab of a diesel locomotive, and tour a vintage rail car.

"This event allows us to showcase our operations at the shop and it helps demonstrate that BNSF is an important part of Topeka," said Curt Meyers, shop superintendent. "When members of the public enter the facility, I think they are surprised at the scale of our operations. It really hits home to them then."

In addition to welcoming the public, BNSF showed its appreciation to the community by presenting a $7,500 donation to the Topeka Boys & Girls Club.

"We are very grateful to BNSF for this and past donations. These times for all non-profits are quite a challenge; each and every day we hear about cuts to federal, state, and local funding. Donations from generous corporations such as BNSF, allow us to provide quality programs and maintain that investment in citizens and our children, and give those children a bright future," said Dawn McWilliams, chief professional officer, Topeka Boys & Girls Club.

For many former and current BNSF employees, this year's open house was a chance to introduce the railroad to neighbors. Robert Haberkorn, a retired shop employee, said he appreciated the opportunity to show extended family and neighbors where he spent much of his life.

Other activities included face painting, balloons, live bands, a classic car show, displays of BNSF memorabilia, and free food. More than 4,000 hamburgers and hotdogs were served.

Most of the local media attended the event, generating positive news coverage for the railroad.

"By all measures this was a very successful open house," Meyers said. "We are very proud of the shops and appreciate the opportunity to show them off to the public."
