BNSF Employee Plays Role in Saving a Mother and Child
2012-06-14
Shane Dollar, a signal maintainer, was driving near Canadian, Texas, during work hours when he noticed debris in the bar-ditch beside the highway.
Because he had not seen the debris when he drove by earlier, he decided to stop and investigate. What he found was an automobile upside down in the bar-ditch - out of sight
from vehicular traffic on the highway. The debris apparently resulted from the crash.
Dollar immediately dialed 9-1-1 and reported his findings, hearing a woman's calls for help as he was on the phone with the operator. Dollar went into the bar-ditch, where he found a woman and her 2-year-old child trapped inside the car.
Dollar didn't know how long they had been exposed to the extreme heat of the day without water, but he knew that dehydration could worsen any injuries suffered in the accident. He followed the 9-1-1 operator's instructions to provide assistance to the two accident victims.
Both were taken to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
