BNSF Provides "A Clear Vision into Tomorrow's Supply Chain" at Supply Chain Summit

2012-06-18

"A Clear Vision into Tomorrow's Supply Chain" was the focus of the 2012 BNSF Supply Chain Summit held June 14 in Grapevine, Texas.

Supply Chain Summit drew nearly 260 attendees, an all-time high for the annual event. Among the attendees were representatives from 49 beneficial cargo owners (BCOs / shippers) - 71% of them were attending their first summit ever. Other attendees included truckload carriers, ocean carriers, intermodal marketing companies (IMCs) and 3PLs.

Discussions centered on supply chain optimization and new and innovative approaches to preparing for the evolving dynamics of tomorrow's supply chain. In addition, great progress was made in dispelling myths about intermodal that often stifle over-the-road opportunities - even when the opportunities are great fits for our intermodal network.

"The supply chain summit represents a great opportunity to continue conveying the value of Next Generation Intermodal," said Steve Branscum, group vice president, Consumer Products. "Our attendees use this event to share information and collaborate with their peers and colleagues within the supply chain, and collaboration is a fundamental part of Next Generation Intermodal."

The summit opened with a guest presentation from Peter Levesque, noted author and chief commercial officer of Modern Terminals Limited in Hong Kong. Levesque, an authoritative voice in international transportation and logistics, provided a unique insight into the future of retail supply chain management.

In addition to an intermodal update from Branscum, other topics included a state of the industry discussion along with updates on the economy, and updates within the BNSF Marketing and Transportation groups. BNSF speakers included:

  • Matt Rose, chairman and CEO
  • John Lanigan, executive vice president and chief marketing officer
  • Greg Fox, executive vice president, Operations
  • Paul B. Anderson, vice president, Marketing Support

Attendees also enjoyed a series of interactive panel sessions titled "Taking Your Supply Chain to the Next Generation." Panels included:

  • "Maximizing Reliability in Your International Supply Chain," moderated by Fred Malesa, vice president, International Intermodal Marketing,
  • "Gaining Visibility into New Markets," moderated by Gregg Zody, director, Domestic Intermodal,
  • "Improving Supply Chain Flexibility - Breaking Down Barriers," moderated by Katie Farmer, vice president, Domestic Intermodal.

Participants from these sessions included leaders from ocean carriers (Maersk Line, OOCL USA), motor carriers (JB Hunt, Schneider National, Swift), specialist transportation companies (Boyd Bros., C.H. Robinson, Marten Transport) and shippers (Grainger, Armada, Charming Shoppes, Kimberly-Clark)
