Alliance, Neb., celebrates 125 years
2013-02-05
BNSF recently helped the city of Alliance, Neb., kick off a year-long celebration of its 125th birthday by sounding a ceremonial train whistle at midnight on Jan. 27, marking
arrival of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad 125 years ago on Jan. 27, 1888.
Bruno Soto, shop superintendent in Alliance, also presented the Celebration Committee with a $10,000 check from the BNSF Railway Foundation to assist with birthday events throughout the year.
"BNSF has deep roots in Alliance and we are very proud to be a part of the community's rich history," said Andy Williams, BNSF regional public affairs director. "Reaching Alliance 125 years ago was an important milestone for the railroad. We are very pleased to support the celebration, and we look forward to participating in events throughout the year."
Williams said that in addition to the financial support, the railroad hopes to host an open house at the mechanical shops during Heritage Days, held annually in July.
Alliance has played a key role in rail operations for BNSF and predecessor railroads.
Currently more than 75 trains pass through Alliance daily, making it one of the busiest locations on BNSF's network. Alliance is also home to a BNSF locomotive shop and car shop.
