BNSF participates in crossing enforcement event in Sioux Falls, S.D.

2013-07-01

Representatives of BNSF's Field Safety Support and Transportation worked with the police in Sioux Falls, S.D., during a grade-crossing enforcement event that covered four crossings on three streets in late May.

Local police observed the driving behavior of motorists and used the opportunity to educate the public about grade-crossing safety. Seventeen citations were issued during the 90-minute event.

"The Sioux Falls police joined forces with us to help raise awareness of the motoring public to grade crossing safety," said Tom Micek, regional manager, Field Safety Support.

Mike Carolan, trainmaster, added, "The officers were great to work with and very appreciative of BNSF."

BNSF and the Sioux Falls police plan to do another crossing enforcement event in July.

"We appreciate the opportunity to work with BNSF during these events. I know all the officers involved in the train ride value our relationship with BNSF," said Sgt. Keith Gries of the Sioux Falls Police.

During the first five months of 2013, BNSF employees sponsored 52 grade-crossing enforcement events at locations across the network.
