BNSF will serve new grain shuttle loading facility in Laurel, Neb.

2013-07-01

Agrex, Inc., recently broke ground on a new grain shuttle loading facility that will be directly served by BNSF.

The $20-million facility has the capacity to store 2.6 million bushels of grain products at a time and be able to transfer 80,000 bushels per hour into rail cars. The facility is also designed to load 110-car unit trains. These agricultural products will be destined for markets in the Pacific Northwest and Mexico, as well as sites along BNSF routes in the southwestern states.

"BNSF is pleased to offer Agrex a new service option to move their grain to market," said Greg Guthrie, director, Agricultural Products Marketing. "The new shuttle facility will be an asset to the surrounding community as well. Local farmers will have a new outlet for grain sales and Agrex will be adding up to eight full-time positions to support the facility.

Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman attended the event as well as many other Laurel community leaders, expressing excitement about BNSF's involvement, and opportunities for future development and sustainability.

"Laurel believes that BNSF is a critical piece of their economic future," said Guthrie. "BNSF is their connection to the world and we create a direct link to the supply chain. With full confidence in our rail service, Laurel will be able to take advantage of opportunities to market and develop their community."

Laurel's facility, the third of its kind in Nebraska, is expected to be operational by August 2014.
