US congresswoman tours BNSF facility in Galesburg, Ill.

2013-09-16

First-term United States Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-Ill.) visited BNSF's Galesburg yard on Sept. 4 to see firsthand the busy operations and capacity expansion projects under way at the facility.

Bustos, who represents the 17th Congressional District of Illinois, was joined on the tour by State Rep. Don Moffitt.

Galesburg is one of the busiest classification yards on the BNSF system and represents a major economic and employment center in the congresswoman's district. John Abrahamson, terminal superintendent, conducted the tour and provided Bustos with an introduction to the U.S. freight rail industry, an overview of BNSF and a detailed briefing on the Galesburg facility's operations, volumes and importance to the BNSF network and nation's overall freight supply chain.

In a radio interview following the tour, Bustos stated, "There's been some tremendous growth and there's tremendous potential for future growth as well. My last words to the folks here at BNSF is how we can be of help at a federal level, how Don can be a help at a state level. We want to make sure that we're working together."

Bustos, who worked in journalism and later for one of the nation's largest non-profit health care systems before coming to Congress, serves on the House Agriculture Committee as well as the all-important House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, which has jurisdiction over rail regulatory issues.
