BNSF makes the 2013 InformationWeek 500 list of top technology innovators

BNSF was honored Sept. 9 as an InformationWeek 500 company by InformationWeek magazine.

"The theme of this year's InformationWeek 500 is digital business. It's a movement, rooted in data analytics, mobile computing, social networking and other customer-focused technologies that are turning companies and industries on their ear," said InformationWeek Editor-in-Chief Rob Preston. "Every enterprise is now a digital business--or needs to become one fast. The organizations in our ranking are leading the way."

BNSF was included in the InformationWeek 500 for its methodology and implementation of an innovative tool using light detection, which maps track and related assets at a higher level of precision than the previous survey tools. In addition to the location of the track itself, the survey tool also captures locations of many other features such as mileposts, signals, signs, switches and grade crossings where roads or other tracks intersect with the rail.

BNSF was the first company to create and use a mobile, land-based tool, applying a technology that uses lasers to take thousands of measurements per second. Previously, the most commonly used method of collecting data with light detection was an aerial survey via helicopter. BNSF's innovative approach has this system mounted on top of a hy-rail equipped truck, and it gathers data as the truck drives along the track.

Implementation of light detection on a rail vehicle is a new and novel implementation of the technology. With this tool, BNSF is able to gather very accurate data quickly and efficiently with minimal impact to freight operations.

InformationWeek identifies and honors the nation's most innovative users of information technology with its annual InformationWeek 500 listing, and also tracks the technology, strategies, investments, and administrative practices of some of the best‐known organizations in the country. Unique among corporate rankings, the InformationWeek 500 spotlights the power of innovation in information technology.
