BNSF Gearing Up for a Successful UPS Peak Season
2007-11-26
It’s that time of year again – when BNSF employees and UPS pull together to achieve a damage-free, on-time holiday shipping season! This season, that will mean working together to ingate, load and expedite more than 30,000 loads in the 28 short days between Monday, Nov. 26, and Sunday, Dec. 23.
BNSF personnel met with Hub and Transportation teams as well as local UPS representatives at 16 operating locations throughout October to make preparations for this UPS Peak Season. The UPS Peak planning process concluded with a meeting between BNSF and UPS leaders Nov. 6 in Fort Worth.
"The purpose of these meetings was to bring together the local UPS and BNSF teams at each location. We discussed UPS' service needs in each area for the upcoming peak season and ensured that everyone understood those service requirements," explains Jim Gordon, director, Sales.
BNSF has achieved seven perfect Peak Seasons since 1995, with back-to-back perfect Peaks in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Tom G. Williams, assistant vice president, Intermodal Service Design, says BNSF is well-positioned for a successful 2007 Peak Season.
"We have built solid momentum with our service over the past three months, and we are seeing the best intermodal velocity of the year as we move into mid-November. The Transportation, Engineering and Mechanical teams have BNSF well-positioned to continue this momentum into a very successful Peak Season," says Williams.
BNSF employees go all out to ensure top-quality service for millions of UPS customers during UPS Peak. During the 2006 UPS Peak Season, 25 "good saves" were reported by BNSF employees. Good saves are actions that BNSF employees do that save a UPS load and prevent service failures. In the past, our good saves have included proactive identification of mis-billed shipments, speedy derailment recoveries, spur-of-the-moment repairs of bad orders, timely broken rail repairs and more.
Gordon encourages employees to report this year’s good saves by e-mailing them to goodsave@bnsf.com. UPS needs all of us for a Perfect Peak – because we’re the team that’s at our peak – every shipment!
