Santa Fe Steam Locomotive 2926 Added to National Register
2007-11-26
On Oct. 1, 2007, Santa Fe steam locomotive No. 2926 was added to the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service. No. 2926, a 4-8-4 passenger locomotive built by Baldwin in 1944 and retired in 1953, is being restored to operating condition by the New Mexico Steam Locomotive and Railroad Historical Society (NMSLRHS) at its Albuquerque, N.M., facility.
In September, the restoration effort achieved a major milestone by reassembling the tender. The eight-wheel Buckeye trucks were spotted on a spur behind the locomotive, and the 24,500-gallon water tank was lowered onto the trucks, followed by dropping the 7,000-gallon fuel tank into the coal pocket in the water tank.
The NMSLRHS has work sessions on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.. The public is invited to visit the site at 8th Street and Haines Avenue NW in Albuquerque to tour the facility and see the results of the restoration efforts.
Progress on this effort can be tracked by viewing photos and text updated regularly and posted on http://www.nmslrhs.org.
