Slips, Trips and Falls Don’t Take a Holiday
2007-12-10
Slips, trips and falls continue to be a leading cause of injuries during the holiday season. According to the latest Centers for Disease Control (CDC) report, 17,465 persons were treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments during a three-year period for falls related to holiday decorating. Approximately 62 percent of those injured were aged 20 - 49 years. Forty-three percent of these injuries were caused by falls from ladders, and males were 40 percent more likely than females to be injured. The majority of these injuries were preventable. Please take time to understand and practice safety this holiday season.
Proactive Ladder Safety
The CDC reports that approximately half of holiday injuries, 56 percent, were caused by falls from considerable heights (ladders and roofs) and an additional 11 percent were caused by falls from moderate heights (tables, chairs, beds and step stools).
-
Always select ladders or step stools instead of chairs, boxes, tables or other unsuitable items to support your weight.
-
Inspect ladders before use to ensure they are safe to use.
-
Remember the One-to-Four Rule with ladder use; for every 4 feet of height, the ladder base should be 1 foot from the wall.
-
Be sure you place the ladder on an even, level surface before beginning to climb.
-
When using stepladders or step stools, do not stand any higher than the second step from the top of the ladder.
-
Do not overreach. Instead, step down, move the ladder, and then finish the task at hand.
Proactive Holiday Safety
Ladders are not the only source of slips, trips and falls during the holidays. Be aware of other potential hazards that can cause these types of injuries.
-
Place cords along walls, clear of walking areas. Extension cords in and around trees and outside lights can create potential tripping hazards.
-
Keep walkways free of clutter. Holiday ornaments and tree skirts account for some slipping injuries. Be sure these do not interfere with walking areas around a tree.
-
Be watchful for "slick" patches on sidewalks or streets, especially if you are carrying several items. Traveling during the holidays can present some challenges if you live in areas that are snowy or icy. Be sure your path is well lit.
