“BNSF Velocity” Runs to Victory in Charitable Race
2007-12-17
It was a cold, wet day in Dallas, Sunday, Dec. 9, but the weather didn’t slow down a five-man BNSF marathon team that strode to first place in the first-to-finish corporate relay category. Representing BNSF was Doug Hinds, assistant general tax counsel, Tax; Mark Schulze, vice president, Safety, Training & Operations Support; Coby Bullard, director, Operations Support; Ricky Stover, manager, Consumer Products Marketing; and Mike Brown, general director, Benefits -- or team "BNSF Velocity," as they called themselves -- at the annual White Rock Marathon.
With a time of two hours, 43 minutes (a respectable 6:14 per-mile pace), BNSF Velocity was the fastest of the 125 corporate teams. Of the 26.2 miles total, there were five "legs" in the relay, varying from four to 6.2 miles.
This was the second time the runners participated in the corporate relay, sponsored by Southern Methodist University’s Cox School of Business, but the first time these five ran as a team. Their "prize" was $5,000, benefiting the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. The BNSF Foundation also contributed $5,000 to the hospital.
While the team members did not train together, their individual efforts obviously paid off. "We weren’t the oldest or the youngest out there," says Hinds, noting there were categories for oldest and youngest teams. "We feel honored to have won and to have represented BNSF."
Congratulations!
