Special Ride Gives Children Passenger Rail Experience
2008-12-01
A BNSF tradition that began nine years ago continued in November when a special passenger train benefiting less-fortunate children operated, thanks to the efforts of Arizona-area employees.
This year, children from Make-a-Wish, Arizonans for Children, Rise Children’s Services, Phoenix Children’s Hospital and The Center for Burns and Trauma were represented. Ken Kyer, locomotive engineer and local chairman with the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, was the organizer.
The train, made up of 10 BNSF business cars and two locomotives, operated on the Phoenix Subdivision between Glendale and Matthie, Ariz. More than 400 people were on board. When they weren’t watching the view from the train, riders enjoyed face painters, balloon artists and other entertainment. Hats and wooden train whistles were provided along with drinks and snacks, courtesy of the Southwest Division.
A second train for local employees also operated later that afternoon.
