How Do You Handle Spam E-mail?
2008-12-15
An increase in e-mail spam has prompted BNSF Enterprise Security to issue a security advisory alerting employees to the potentially harmful effects of spam e-mail.
All employees must be alert for unsolicited emails, e-cards or suspicious e-mail with holiday overtones requesting personal or financial account information. These unsolicited e-mails are attempts to get employees to compromise personal or company information.
Please do not reply to spam e-mail; instead, forward the e-mail to the SPAM@BNSF.com Outlook mailbox for review and handling.
The Enterprise Security Team offers these security tips:
-
Never open an e-card. E-cards are often used to deliver viruses or malicious code.
-
If you receive an e-mail requesting account information from a financial institution with whom you do business, verify the e-mail with its customer service department. If you are not a customer, delete the e-mail.
-
Verify links to Web sites in e-mails, and then key in the URL.
Other tips and advice for protecting personal information may be found on the TS Enterprise Security WIKI page, which is accessible from the BNSF intranet home page.
