Holiday Travel, Poor Eating Habits Can Be Gut-Wrenching
2008-12-22
When eating on the run, people often throw their good eating habits out the window.
That can be especially true during the holiday season, when travel by plane, train and automobile is augmented by pastries, spirits and over-filled dinner plates.
Add the extra food to long hours spent behind the wheel, flying across the country and sleeping away from home, and you have the perfect recipe for tummy trouble.
"When people travel, they drink lots of carbonated drinks, snack between meals and often gulp down their meals because they're in a hurry to catch a plane. This eating behavior only worsens the gastrointestinal problems that we already experience due to travel," said Dr. Sandra Hoogerwerf, an assistant professor in the department of internal medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School.
