Do I qualify for dental and vision insurance?

Scheduled employees are eligible for dental and vision insurance on the first day of their 13th month. You will receive a letter at your home with benefit information approximately two weeks prior to coverage being effective.

Do I have life insurance?

Most active scheduled employees have $20,000 in life insurance through Metropolitan Life. For everyone other than Intermodal employees, call Metropolitan Life at 800-310-7770, prompt 1, to verify or change your beneficiary. Intermodal Employees call Allied Services Division at 847-981-0491. There is no option to purchase additional coverage for the employee or family.

For general eligibility issues (employee or dependents), call Plan Administrator United Healthcare at 800-842-9905. If UHC is not able to assist you, call the BNSF Benefits Helpline at 800-234-1283 (company line 593-6400), prompt 2, for union employee, prompt 1 for Medical, Dental or Vision insurance, and prompt 1 for eligibility.

How do I add dependents to my health insurance?

Contact Plan Administrator United Healthcare at 800-842-9905. UHC will advise the documents required to add a new spouse and/or dependent child (including children 19 through 24 that are full-time students).

What if I do not want to be covered by the company-provided insurance?

You can “opt out” if you have other coverage, but only as a new hire or during open enrollment each year. The open enrollment packets are mailed to each employee in the fall, with insurance choices available for the following year. If you opt out, you must mail in paperwork each year.

Do I have to mail in my monthly employee contribution if I'm off work (due to furlough or illness)?

No. If you end up owing such contributions, the monies will be deducted from future paychecks when you return to work or receive compensation for vacation, etc.

What is my cost to add dependents to my health insurance?

There is no additional cost - the employee monthly contribution is the same for individual or family coverage.

Does my cost increase when I'm eligible for dental and vision insurance?

No. There is no additional cost - the employee monthly contribution remains the same.
