Help with Spreadsheet Files in Delimited ASCII Format

The spreadsheet files are designed to closely follow the format of the tariff page, with (left to right) stations, followed by up to five columns for rates.

Delimited ASCII files of rates are posted on the BNSF web site at the time the tariff item is issued, rather than at the time the rates go into effect. Only one version of an item's delimited ASCII file is available on our site at any point in time... the most recent revision displacing the previous version. There is no Pending/Current complement to the delimited ASCII files. Consequently, users of this data must carefully manage the date and timing issues.

The delimited ASCII files include an 'effective' [firstday] and 'cancel' [lastday] date field which can aid users in managing the timing element of the data. The delimited ASCII files also include a file number field [FILENUM], which can be used to link rate files to the tariff text files. The file number is found on each tariff page in the bottom right hand corner.

Instructions for downloading BNSF 4022 spreadsheet files in delimited ASCII format to your PC.

1. Select the rate item you need from the menu. Use your mouse and click on the item number.

2. After you click your mouse on one of the items, our Internet site will retrieve and display on your screen a bunch of stuff that looks like this:

Do not panic, or be afraid. This is a delimited ASCII file. It will not hurt your screen or your system.

3. Go to your Internet browser's FILE menu and open it up, select SAVE AS... and when prompted, indicate the desired drive letter, path, and file name. We suggest you keep the same file name that we use, which is: ITM99999.txt, and where 99999 represents the individual item number of the data file you downloaded.

4. Start up your Excel or other spreadsheet program after you finish or minimize your Internet session. Under the FILE menu on your spreadsheet program, select OPEN. An OPEN FILE dialog box will appear on you screen. On the OPEN FILE dialog box, note the section where you select a FILE TYPE, the type you should select is TXT. Check the TXT Options button. Make sure that the delimiter selected is a comma. Close the TXT Options menu. Then, on the OPEN FILE dialog box, click on OK. The delimited ASCII file will be converted and read into a spreadsheet.

5. Make any desired cosmetic enhancements you may desire, such as changing the titles to bold, and centering the data in some columns. Some values are proceeded by an asterisk '*' or a " ` " so that the spreadsheet programs will treat it as a set of characters rather than a numerical value. If you remove these marks, in some cases the value could be misinterpreted.

For questions or suggestions (complaints ??) about the use or design of these files, call us at (817) 352-6789.
