Illinois coal deposits are characterized by high BTU, mid-range sulfur, moderate ash, and low moisture content. Eastern coal-fired power plants often times blend high-BTU Illinois coal with low-sulfur western coal to optimize their coal burns. BNSF has access to Illinois mines through interchange with other railroads.
