Powder River Basin
The Powder River Basin (PRB) of Montana and Wyoming is the largest low sulfur coal source in the nation. Eight of the ten largest mines in the United States are located in the PRB.
MontanaMontana leads the nation in compliance coal reserves with over 50 billion tons. In 2008, Montana produced 45 million tons making it the fifth largest coal producing state in the country. |

WyomingWyoming has about 25 billion tons of compliance reserves. Coal underlies over half the state covering 53,000 square miles. A total of 468 millions tons of coal was produced in Wyoming during 2008 with 97% originating in the Powder River Basin. Approximately 40% of all U.S. steam coal is produced in Wyoming. |
