To Become a Carrier

BNSF provides Intermodal service for carriers that own or lease private trailers or containers. If you own your equipment, and desire to ship on BNSF, please follow the steps below to become a BNSF Intermodal Carrier.

1
BNSF partners with companies who own or lease private containers or trailers. Contact Mary Ellen Sima (e-mail or phone 817-867-6034) for information about becoming a BNSF Intermodal Carrier. If you do not own private equipment, please contact one of these Intermodal Carriers.
2
An Intermodal Transportation Contract must be signed before shipping (sample contract). To pursue a contract with BNSF, contact Mary Ellen Sima. In addition, review the BNSF Intermodal Rules and Policies Guide for general rules, shipping instructions, etc.
3
Proof of insurance is required with BNSF shown as the "certificate holder". The insurance requirements are outlined in the BNSF Intermodal Rules and Policies Guide, Item 14: Private Equipment Insurance. It may take 24-48 hours for the outside insurance compliance company's approval.
4
Complete the online Credit Application and Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT-7) application. It may take 24 hours for notification.
5

To ship private containers on BNSF, a Pool Operator Agreement and Private Container Agreement (sample contract) must be signed.

6
Equipment fleet information must be submitted. Include initial and number, type of equipment (trailer, container, chassis), year manufactured, length, width, height, and kin pin setting. All equipment should have initials. If equipment does not have initials, see this information.
7
Register drivers with UIIA in order for drivers to enter a BNSF Intermodal Facility.
8
Register for BNSF.com tools, located on BNSF's home page, upper right corner - Register/Login as Customer (click on the orange circle), once the page opens, click on Register Here. It will take 24-48 hours for records to process. Features of interest include sending shipping instructions (and changes), tracking and tracing, receiving price authorities electronically, etc. Contact eBusiness for assistance.
9
Prior to moving your first intermodal shipment, review BNSF Load And Ride Solutions (LARS) information on the latest technology in security, packaging, loading patterns, weight distribution techniques, and other services. There are certain commodities deemed as “restricted” (requiring special provisions prior to shipping) or "prohibited" on BNSF. Contact the LARS Manager closest to your location to answer detailed loading and security questions. On-site evaluations or training sessions are also available.
