Shippers

If you do not own your own containers or trailers, please contact one of the following Intermodal Carriers. These carriers can assist with moving individual or multiple shipments, including interline traffic and complete door-to-door movement by arranging equipment, waybilling (shipping instructions), drayage, tracing, etc.

To Become a Carrier

BNSF provides Intermodal service for carriers that own or lease private trailers or containers. If you own your equipment, and desire to ship on BNSF, please follow the steps below to become a BNSF Intermodal Carrier.

1

BNSF partners with companies who own their own equipment. If you do not own private equipment, please contact one of these Intermodal Carriers.

If you own or lease private containers or trailers, contact Mary Ellen Sima (e-mail or phone 817-867-6034), she will provide information about becoming a BNSF Intermodal Carrier.

2

An Intermodal Transportation Contract must be signed before shipping (sample contract). To pursue a contract with BNSF, contact Mary Ellen Sima (e-mail or phone 817-867-6034).

Review the BNSF Intermodal Rules and Policies Guide for shipping instructions, general rules, etc.

Proof of insurance is required, as stated in the BNSF Intermodal Rules and Policies Guide. IDS (insurance compliance company) will obtain the proper insurance documents.

To ship private containers on BNSF, a Pool Operator Agreement and Private Container Agreement must be signed.

3

Complete the online Credit Application and Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT-7) application.

4

Register for BNSF.com tools, located on BNSF's home page, upper right corner - Register/Login as Customer (click on the orange circle), once the page opens, click on Register Here.

5

Prior to moving your first intermodal shipment, review BNSF Load And Ride Solutions (LARS) information on the latest technology in security, packaging, loading patterns, weight distribution techniques, and other services. There are certain commodities deemed as “restricted” on BNSF, requiring special provisions prior to shipping.

Contact the LARS Manager closest to your location to answer detailed loading and security questions. On-site evaluations or training sessions are also available. Complete the following Loading and Security Acknowledgment Form to confirm you have reviewed loading and security information.
