Canadian Pacific Railway Joins North American Container System

FORT WORTH, Texas, February 14, 2001:

The Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company (BNSF) today announced that Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) has a become a participant in the North American Container System (NACS).

The other participants are BNSF, Canadian National Railway Company (CN), CSX Intermodal (CSXI), I & M Rail Link, Kansas City Southern Railway Company (KCS), Norfolk Southern Railway Company (NS), Texas-Mexican Railway Company (TM), Transportacion Ferroviaria Mexicana (TFM) and Wisconsin Central Transportation Corporation (WCTC).

NACS was created in February 1996 as a North American doublestack network encompassing almost every major U.S. market. It is designed to facilitate the free interchange of 48- and 53-foot domestic containers between member railroads without restrictions.

“CPR’s participation in NACS will provide customers shipping between Canada, U.S. and Mexico increased competitive options for traffic currently moving over the road,” said John McBoyle, general manager, CPR Domestic Intermodal. “Through interline initiatives like NACS, railroads are providing shippers with seamless operations for improved market reach. This is another excellent example of alliances that benefit the shipping community and assist railroads in growing market share.”

“We are very pleased Canadian Pacific has decided to join the NACS program,” said Steve Branscum, group vice president, BNSF Consumer Products Marketing. “The program has evolved over the past five years to provide customers a truly superior product. With ten participating railroads, NACS provides customers superior market coverage with real economic benefits and equipment flexibility.”

Canadian Pacific Railway provides rail and intermodal freight transportation services coast to coast over a 14,000-mile network extending from Montreal to Vancouver, and throughout the U.S. Midwest and Northeast. Commercial alliances with other carriers extend CPR's market reach beyond its own network. Serving ports on the east coasts of Canada and the United States, and the Port of Vancouver, CPR links North America with European and Pacific Rim markets, moving large volumes of import and export goods across the continent. It is also a leading carrier in the intermodal industry, with 23 terminals across Canada and the northern United States.

Headquartered in Fort Worth, BNSF operates one of the largest rail networks in North America, with 33,500 route miles of track covering 28 states and two Canadian provinces. BNSF moved more than 3.4 million containers and trailers in 2000 through its extensive network of 35 intermodal hubs.
