BNSF Further Expands Guaranteed On-Time Intermodal Service

FORT WORTH, Texas, March 12, 2001:

The Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company (BNSF) today announced that beginning March 19, it will add four more lanes to its guaranteed on-time intermodal service program. The new lanes include service between Memphis/San Bernardino, Chicago/Denver, St. Paul/Portland and St. Paul/Seattle.

With these additional four lanes, BNSF now offers guaranteed intermodal service in 10 lanes connecting major U.S. markets. These lanes include:

  • Chicago/Seattle
  • Chicago/Portland
  • Chicago/San Bernardino
  • Chicago/Denver (New)
  • Chicago/Alliance (DFW)
  • St. Paul/Seattle (New)
  • St. Paul/ Portland (New)
  • Kansas City/Southern California
  • Memphis/San Bernardino (New)
  • Alliance (DFW)/San Bernardino

BNSF, which began offering guaranteed intermodal service in May 2000, is still the only U.S. railroad offering a full money-back service guarantee. The guarantee allows shippers to purchase, for a premium, a service guarantee for three intermodal service levels for domestic intermodal shipments in these ten lanes. For each load that does not meet the scheduled availability time for customer pick-up, BNSF will offer a 100-percent refund.

“With more than 1,000 guaranteed loads moved to date, the shipping community has embraced BNSF’s service guarantee,” says Steve Branscum, group vice president, BNSF Consumer Products. “Our service guarantee is attracting new customers who have traditionally shipped only over the road. With a 100-percent money-back guarantee, we are showing the shipping community that rail transportation is a competitive alternative to over-the-road transportation.”

Headquartered in Fort Worth, BNSF operates one of the largest rail networks in North America, with 33,500 route miles of track covering 28 states and two Canadian provinces. BNSF moved more than 3.4 million containers and trailers in 2000 through its extensive network of more than 35 intermodal hubs and intermodal market extension facilities.
