CSXI to Participate in BNSF's Mexi-Modal Transborder Intermodal Service

FORT WORTH, Texas and JACKSONVILLE, Fla., September 26, 2001:

The Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company (BNSF) and CSX Intermodal (CSXI) today announced that CSXI is now a participant in the Mexi-Modal network.

Mexi-Modal is a transborder intermodal service launched in June by BNSF to create a seamless North American transportation network. CSXI’s participation expands the Mexi-Modal network by adding major northeastern U.S. markets, including Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City.

“With this partnership, Mexi-Modal customers can easily move freight to most major points in Canada, Mexico and the United States,” said Steve Branscum, group vice president, BNSF Consumer Products. “Adding CSXI is another step in developing a comprehensive transborder shipping network. We continue to look for opportunities to further expand the Mexi-Modal network.”

“Through our participation in the Mexi-Modal network, we can offer our customers a truck-competitive, easy-to-use transportation option into and out of Mexico,” said Clarence Gooden, CSXI president. “Customers in the Northeast will now have a service to Mexico which provides the reliability of truck and the value of rail.”

With Mexi-Modal, BNSF coordinates the entire transborder shipping process, door-to-door through cooperation with Canadian National Railway Company (CN), CSX Intermodal, Transportacion Ferroviaria Mexicana (TFM) and several Mexican trucking companies.

“The key to moving freight into and out of Mexico is execution at the border,” said Richard Miller, assistant vice president, BNSF Mexico Business. “With Mexi-Modal, we’ve assumed all the responsibilities for this and have yet to have one load held at the border due to documentation failure. That’s played a large role in the initial success of Mexi-Modal.”

Through the Mexi-Modal Internet site, posted at bnsf.com/productofferings, customers can instantly check door-to-door rates for service in various lanes. Then, with a simple call to a Mexi-Modal representative, customers can book loads and arrange for movement of freight.

CSX Intermodal is an integrated intermodal company serving domestic U.S. and international customers throughout North America from origin to destination with its own truck, rail and terminal operations.

A subsidiary of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation (NYSE: BNI), BNSF operates one of the largest rail networks in North America, with 33,500 route miles of track covering 28 states and two Canadian provinces. In 2000, BNSF moved more than 3.5 million containers and trailers through its extensive network of 35 intermodal hubs, making it the largest intermodal carrier in the world.
