BNSF's Web site and eCommerce Capabilities Praised by Four Technology Publications

FORT WORTH, Texas, December 12, 2001:

The Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company (BNSF) today announced that four separate publications covering technology and eCommerce recognized BNSF’s Web site and eCommerce capabilities in November.

In each publication, BNSF was ranked as a leader among U.S. companies in using the Internet to generate sales and growth, as well as having excellent Web site functionality. The awards were:

Interactive Week – BNSF ranked 13th out of 500 top companies that generated the most revenue from their Web operations within the last year, and was the highest ranked transportation company or railroad listed.

InfoWorld – BNSF ranked 61st on a list of 100 companies that were cited as innovators in information technology. These companies were recognized for putting enterprise technologies to creative use to bolster business efforts, streamline business processes, reduce costs, save resources, improve customer service and create new streams of revenue. BNSF was the only railroad listed.

Eweek – BNSF ranked 307th out of 500 companies that use their Web site to connect with customers, suppliers and partners. Also considered were the internal IT resources these companies rely on to keep eBusiness moving.

BtoB – BNSF was given a score of 84 (out of a possible 100) in a list of companies that use their Web site to brand and sell products and services.

In addition to these recognitions, BNSF was also listed in the September issue of Smart Business as one of the top 50 U.S. companies that do the best job using the Internet to enhance and expand their existing businesses.

“We’re pleased that some of the top publications covering technology and eBusiness have recognized BNSF’s efforts to utilize eCommerce and our Web site to streamline and Web-enable the business process,” said Kathleen Regan, vice president, Business Development. “This recognition confirms that we’re heading in the right direction, and provides encouragement as we prepare several enhancements to our Web site and eCommerce capabilities to be launched early 2002.”

A subsidiary of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation (NYSE: BNI), BNSF operates one of the largest rail networks in North America, with 33,500 route miles of track covering 28 states and two Canadian provinces. BNSF is an industry leader in Web-enabling a wide variety of customer transactions. The railway moves more intermodal traffic than any other rail system in the world, is America’s largest grain-hauling railroad, and hauls enough coal to generate more than 11 percent of the electricity produced in the United States.
