What's Changing in Brief
BNSF is changing the way its medical and prescription drug benefits work for Medicare-eligible participants beginning in 2013. In addition, new vision care and dental coverage options will be offered.
The changes apply to retirees and surviving spouses of retirees who:
- Were retired from Santa Fe when it merged with Burlington Northern, or at that time were a salaried employee of Santa Fe who remained salaried until retirement, and
- Are already eligible for Medicare.
If you will become Medicare-eligible on or after January 1, 2013 and you meet the above criteria, the changes will apply to you at that time. You will be mailed and may ask for enrollment information about four months before you turn age 65.
To continue receiving BNSF's financial support of medical coverage, participants who are currently Medicare-eligible must choose coverage through Extend Health. The enrollment period for 2013 coverage begins Oct. 18, 2012 and action is required: If you do not make an election by Dec. 31, 2012, you will permanently forfeit your BNSF medical benefits.
You will have help every step of the way. Extend Health's licensed benefit advisors will provide objective, personal assistance before and after enrollment.
