Zero-Emission Electronic Cranes

BNSF will be the first rail carrier in North America to use zero-emissions electronic wide-span cranes at key intermodal facilities.

Operating solely from electric power, these wide-span cranes produce zero emissions on-site. The wide stance design of these new cranes also eliminates as many as six diesel trucks (hostlers) for shuttling containers within the intermodal facility. The electronic crane greatly reduces the need for hostlers, reducing emissions and improving fuel efficiency.

BNSF has already installed this technology at our Seattle International Gateway Facilities. In the future, BNSF plans to utilize this technology at several other facilities including Memphis Intermodal Facility (2009 tentative), Southern California International Gateway (2009, pending environmental review), and a new proposed intermodal facility located near Kansas City (pending environmental review).
