AB 1305 Statement

Pursuant to California’s Voluntary Carbon Market Disclosure Act (“AB 1305”), companies that make certain emissions reduction claims are required to disclose information supporting those claims on their public website. BNSF Railway Company (“BNSF”) does not market, sell, purchase, or use voluntary carbon offsets in meeting its emissions reduction goal. BNSF also does not have a net-zero or similar emissions reduction target. However, BNSF has adopted a goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as described in our Corporate Impact Report and summarized below.

BNSF set a science-based target that was reviewed, validated, and approved by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). BNSF is committed to reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions, as well as the well-to-wheel GHG emissions associated with our locomotives, 30 percent by 2030 (from a baseline year of 2018). BNSF plans to achieve our goal in two primary ways: by continuing to improve the fuel-efficiency of our locomotives and through the increased utilization of renewable fuels. To track our progress, BNSF compiles an annual emissions inventory following the GHG Protocol that is validated by an independent third party. Updates related to emissions reductions are published annually in BNSF’s Corporate Impact Report.
