Coal Network Update for Friday, June 6, 2025
OPERATIONAL PERFORMANCE
Flooding from severe weather is affecting parts of the BNSF network in Kansas. Persistent heavy rain, flash flooding and elevated water levels led to track outages on two of our subdivisions in south-central Kansas. The Douglass subdivision, located southeast of Wichita, went out of service on Wednesday night due to the closure of floodgates. As communicated to impacted customers, a portion of the Arkansas City subdivision was taken out of service last night.
Based on current forecasts, water levels affecting the Arkansas City subdivision are expected to crest this evening. The affected section of the track is expected to open tomorrow morning, pending track evaluation and repairs if needed, as the water recedes. The Douglass subdivision is currently out of service due to floodgate closures, with no estimated reopening date/time available at present. BNSF operations teams are re-routing some trains where possible to move traffic through the area. Customers with shipments designated to move through these regions should expect some delays until operations have fully normalized.
Despite this weather-related challenge, we continue to make incremental improvements in service performance. Average car velocity has increased by over four percent compared to the previous month, while terminal dwell has improved from the prior week and month. Our local service compliance measure, although trending slightly lower, remains above 91 percent.
SERVICE EXPECTATIONS FOR THE WEEK AHEAD
BNSF continues to monitor a series of prolonged and severe thunderstorms affecting states in the Central and Southern Plains. These storms are anticipated to persist through the weekend, bringing heavy rain showers and posing a high risk of large hail, strong winds exceeding 60 mph, and tornadoes.
Favorable operating conditions are expected across most of the network moving into next week.
