The Emulator is not launching when using Windows 8? Why?
This can be caused if the Java run time components are missing. With Windows 8, Java is not preinstalled and the following link contains directions for installing Java.

I submit the Login Name and Password and immediately get redirected back to the logon page or the emulator start page. Why?
This problem can be the result of one of two reasons:
1. You attempted to access the emulator from a web site other than https://www.bnsf.com/webconnect/.

2. The use of Internet firewall software on your computer. (Example: Norton Personal Firewall or Microsoft Internet Connection Firewall)

In many cases, we have found the firewall software to be the source of the problem. Please disable the firewall software and attempt to access the emulator again.

Why do I get a red "Token Invalid" screen when I start the emulator?
The emulator is secured by use of a token issued by BNSF.

Check the Start bar where you normally see programs you have opened and running. If you can see an item there labeled BNSF Railway - 3270 then use the right mouse button to click on it. Select Maximize from the menu. You should see your emulator appear full-screen.

Browser Problems
Why do other web sites work on my computer?
The mainframe emulator is not comparable to most web sites because it uses advanced Java technology. You must have a Java and Javascript enabled browser that is capable of downloading a Java applet. See System Requirements for approved browsers.  Back to Top

Does the emulator work with WebTV?  Why does WebTV claim to be able to access the same web sites as Netscape and Microsoft browsers but it will not work on the mainframe emulator?
It is true that WebTV can access BNSF.s home page (www.bnsf.com), but you must be able to do more than access our web page to use the emulator.  WebTV does not contain the advanced java technology required to run the emulator.   Back to Top

Why can't I get the emulator to work through America Online?
The browser supplied by America Online uses proprietary technology and will not work.  If you are on AOL, see the Requirements page for approved browsers.   Back to Top

Do I need a new browser?
We recommend that you use Microsoft Internet Explorer (6.0 and above). The emulator does not work with Chrome. Generally, you need a new browser if your browser does not support Java or you are using the AOL browser. See the System Requirements page for the latest information about browsers.  Back to Top

Logon Problems
Why isn't the page accepting my logon ID and password?
Special IDs are set up for the different groups accessing the emulator. The ID and password are case sensitive, so be sure that you do not have Caps Lock on. This web page will not accept your mainframe ID and password. If you do not know the special ID and password, please see the next question below. If you know a valid logon ID and password, then you might have mistyped it. You should try retyping it in order to get it to work. If you still have problems, clear your memory and disk cache, reload the page and try again.  Back to Top

How can I get the special ID and password for the emulator?
The password for this page is supplied by your supervisor. This is not your mainframe ID and password. If you do not know the ID to use for crew calling access, contact the Mainframe Web group at mainframe.web@bnsf.com.  Back to Top

Why does the emulator applet launch but then not accept my mainframe login?
If the emulator applet comes up successfully, you should be able to do everything that you can do from a mainframe terminal at work. It is possible that your access or password has been changed. Contact the TSOC for further help.  Back to Top

General Problems
Why can't I see all of the data?
What if I can't see the PF key buttons on the emulator?

Some monitors may not show the PF key buttons or all of the data on a page. Decrease the font size on the Font Size menu of the emulator if some data is not visible.  Back to Top

Why are my previous settings not saved when I launch another mainframe emulator?
When you make a change to your emulator settings, select the File menu in the emulator window and click on Save User Settings. This will store your personal settings directly on your computer. You may also need to give the emulator your appropriate location information.   Back to Top

You can enter the command CHGTUBE to save the terminal information from screen to screen.  If you do not have access to this command, you will have to contact the TSOC.   Back to Top

How can I print from the emulator?
To print the emulator screen display, select Print from the File menu.  The "Print Dialog" window will open. This is the same dialog window which opens when you are printing from any other desktop application (i.e. MS Word, Excel etc) Using this window, you may select your printer, change the print quality, number of copies, etc.   Back to Top

When should I contact the TSOC?
The phone number for the TSOC is on the company line, 593-4357 or 1-800-HELP649.  You should contact the TSOC if there is a system outage or if you are having mainframe problems.  If the applet starts with a red bar on the screen and a message that says .OC://WebConnect server has disconnected client., then there is probably an outage.    Back to Top
