BNSF Breaks Ground for Logistics Center - Fontana

FONTANA, Calif., May 12, 2005:

BNSF Railway Company (BNSF) today began construction of the BNSF Logistics Center-Fontana at the Kaiser Commerce Center about 13 miles west of San Bernardino. As previously announced in October 2004, the facility will be operational by the end of this year. The general contractor for the project is Kemp Bros. Construction, Inc.

BNSF logistics centers are located in rapidly growing markets and combine warehousing, storage, carload rail service and transloading (the transfer of product from carload rail to truck or truck to carload rail) in one location. They are typically located near existing intermodal facilities.

BNSF Logistics Center-Fontana will have a 38-acre transload operation that will provide shippers with transload services for all types of commodities; such as dimensional commodities such as lumber and steel, commodities that will require warehousing such as consumer goods, and bulk commodities.

In addition, ProLogis, a leading provider of global distribution facilities and services, has begun construction of an 849,000-square-foot rail-served warehouse adjacent to the Center.

Located near other existing rail-served facilities and on a dedicated spur with direct access to the BNSF main rail line, Logistics Center—Fontana will enable BNSF to improve the gathering and distribution process within its carload network to provide more consistent service, and allows customers to quickly react to market demands.

"With one large facility that handles multiple commodities, BNSF is able to simplify its operations by creating the density required to build trains at this one transload facility instead of gathering rail cars at several smaller ones," said Fritz Draper, BNSF vice president, Business Development. "In the end, our carload customers will benefit from more efficient and consistent service and the customers using this transload facility will have access to more capacity and greater service options."

When completed at the end of 2005, the combined facilities will bring approximately 300 jobs to the area.

A subsidiary of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation (NYSE:BNI), BNSF Railway operates one of the largest railroad networks in North America, with about 32,000 route miles in 28 states and two Canadian provinces. The railway is among the world's top transporters of intermodal traffic, moves more grain than any other American railroad, transports the components of many of the products we depend on daily, and hauls enough low-sulphur coal to generate about ten percent of the electricity produced in the United States.
