Network World honors businesses that create innovative technology solutions for the advancement of their business objectives. The winners in the All-Star competition were selected from nearly 200 entries in eight distinct categories. BNSF Logistics was recognized in the LANs and Routers category for the development of a cost-effective, fully routed network that links its fourteen office locations, two data centers, and one business continuation site using unique open-source-based firewall and router devices. The BNSF Logistics, LLC infrastructure team, led by Gregg Robbins, embarked on an innovative project to provide an enterprise-grade network infrastructure as the foundation to support growth and operating requirements for the next three years. By combining off-the-shelf hardware and open-source software solutions, the infrastructure team was able to deploy a custom solution that met cost and feature-set needs. This project was completed in 90 days and developed under the planned budget amount. "Not only were we able to get a very low-cost solution using open-source technologies, but we were able to combine various open-source products to get a solution that you cannot buy off the shelf," stated Gregg Robbins, System Architect, BNSF Logistics, LLC. Andy Cordischi, Director of Technology for BNSF Logistics, LLC said, "Rapid, cost-effective deployment is critical in delivering timely solutions to customers.
