BNSF Railway Named Among Top Military-Friendly Employers

FORT WORTH, Texas, November 9, 2006:

BNSF Railway Company (BNSF) has been ranked among the top companies in G.I. Jobs magazine's annual listing of the Top 50 Military-Friendly Employers, moving up to fourth place on this year's list from 23rd last year. The magazine describes the list as "the best of the best."

"Firms making more than $1 billion in annual revenues were surveyed to determine which companies put forth the best efforts and produced the best results in hiring America's former service members, and which had the best policies for those who continue to serve in the National Guard and Reserve components," the magazine said.

BNSF has an aggressive hiring program aimed at people transitioning from the military to civilian life. BNSF is on track to hire more than 1,000 veterans this year, up from about 750 in 2005. About 20 percent of all BNSF new-hires are veterans, with more than 150 serving as members of the National Guard and Reserve.

More than 175 BNSF employees are serving on active duty and over 485 have been called up since Sept. 11, 2001. BNSF offers enhanced and extended benefits for those employees called to active duty in the armed services, including make-whole pay and continued health-care benefits. In addition, the railway offers 15 days of make-whole pay for annual training and drill duty.

In September of this year, BNSF was honored by the national committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) as a recipient of the 2006 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. BNSF joined an elite group of 15 companies selected from more than 5,000 nominations, honored for their exceptional support of the National Guard and Reserve.

"BNSF Railway has demonstrated outstanding long-term commitment and support for their Guard and Reserve employees," ESGR said in announcing BNSF's Freedom Award. "BNSF routinely recognizes employees in its internal publications as well as participates in their Welcome Home celebrations."

A subsidiary of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation (NYSE:BNI), BNSF Railway Company operates one of the largest North American rail networks, with about 32,000 route miles in 28 states and two Canadian provinces. BNSF is among the world's top transporters of intermodal traffic, moves more grain than any other American railroad, carries the components of many of the products we depend on daily, and hauls enough low-sulphur coal to generate about ten percent of the electricity produced in the United States. BNSF is an industry leader in Web-enabling a variety of customer transactions at www.bnsf.com.
