BNSF Announces $50,000 in Leadership Scholarships in New Mexico

FORT WORTH, Feb. 24, 2010:

Application process opens March 1

BNSF Foundation today announced it will expand its support of education and scholarships by awarding $50,000 in new college scholarships this year in New Mexico.

From March 1 through April 1, 2010, high school seniors residing in New Mexico will be able to apply online at https://aim.applyists.net/BNSFLeadership to compete for one of eight merit-based BNSF Leadership Scholarships to be awarded in New Mexico.

The state will be divided geographically into four quadrants, and the top two finalists selected from each quadrant based on the online application will be invited to an awards dinner in May. As part of the competition, students will be asked to write a 500-word essay on leadership. First-place winners and runners up will be determined by a panel of New Mexico judges based on the essays.

The top four finalists in each quadrant of the state will receive $2,500 in scholarships per year over a four-year period for a total of $10,000. The four runners-up in each quadrant will receive a one-time $2,500 scholarship.

"New Mexico's schools are producing the leaders of tomorrow," said John Ambler, president, BNSF Foundation. "These young people are the hope and future of New Mexico, of our country, and of the customers and communities we serve. We at BNSF are committed to helping them access the education they require to reach their full potential."

The BNSF Leadership Scholarship program is an expansion of the BNSF Foundation's commitment to education. The Foundation donates more than $1 million annually to education programs, with nearly half of that going to scholarships.

The BNSF Foundation's mission is to support and improve the general welfare and quality of life in communities served by BNSF Railway and has been a main vehicle for charitable giving from and before the 1996 merger of the Burlington Northern and the Santa Fe railroads to form The Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company, now known as BNSF Railway Company. The BNSF Foundation is a Texas non-profit corporation located in Fort Worth.
