BNSF Establishes Logistics Center - Fontana

FORT WORTH, Texas, October 11, 2004:

The Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company (BNSF) today announced it will establish BNSF Logistics Center—Fontana at the Kaiser Commerce Center about 13 miles west of San Bernardino. Construction of the facility will begin in late 2004 and it is scheduled to open third quarter 2005.

This facility will provide transload services for all types of commodities such as:

  • Dimensional commodities such as lumber and steel,
  • Commodities that require warehousing such as consumer goods, and
  • Bulk commodities, which are loaded directly from rail to truck or truck to rail.

"BNSF’s Logistics Center—Fontana is in the center of a rapidly growing market," says Fritz Draper, BNSF vice president, Business Development. "By locating this rail-served transload facility near existing intermodal facilities and distribution and warehousing centers, BNSF can offer shippers more modal choices and greater service options."

The logistics center will have a 38-acre dimensional and bulk transload operation. In addition, ProLogis, a leading provider of global distribution facilities and services, will develop an 849,000-square-foot rail-served warehouse adjacent to the Center.

Located near other existing rail-served facilities and on a dedicated spur with direct access to the BNSF main rail line, Logistics Center—Fontana will enable BNSF to improve the gathering and distribution process within its carload network to provide more consistent service, and allows customers to quickly react to market demands.

"With one large facility that handles multiple commodities, BNSF is able to simplify its operations by creating the density required to build trains at this one transload facility instead of gathering rail cars at several smaller ones," Draper says. "In the end, our carload customers will benefit from better and more consistent service and the customers using this transload facility will have access to more capacity and greater service options."

When completed, the combined facilities will bring approximately 300 jobs to the area.

A subsidiary of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation (NYSE:BNI), BNSF operates one of the largest railroad networks in North America, with about 32,500 route miles covering 28 states and two Canadian provinces. The railway is among the world's top transporters of intermodal traffic, moves more grain than any other American railroad, transports the components of many of the products we depend on daily, and hauls enough low-sulphur coal to generate about ten percent of the electricity produced in the United States.
