BNSF Honors Wyoming Employee for Excellence in Safety

FORT WORTH, Texas, April 11, 2005:

BNSF Railway Company (BNSF) today announced that it named Jerry Garton, BNSF machinist in Douglas, Wyo., one of its six Safety Employees of the Year for 2004.

Garton received this award on April 4, 2005 at a special ceremony in Fort Worth because he has been an active member of BNSF Roadway Equipment Safety Committee since 1994, and has led the group as chairman since 2003. As chairman, Garton hosts monthly conference calls, where he is joined by 21 Roadway Equipment Safety Committee representatives, as well as other Roadway Equipment Safety Committee representatives, and other Roadway Equipment team members.

Garton has been instrumental in the establishment and maintenance of a behavior-based safety program specific to Roadway Equipment. Recognizing that traveling mechanics spend a significant portion of their time driving from one work location to another, he has worked on the development and implementation of educational programs intended to improve driving practices.
