To learn more about our cargo security, explore the tabs below.
Across our Network
- BNSF employs its own fully certified state law enforcement officers who carry full police and arrest powers.
- Our BNSF Police conduct proactive, uniformed patrol to combat trespassing and cargo theft.
- We have a collaborative approach with state and local authorities, customers and citizens.
- BNSF partners with shippers, providing free, on-site security consultation.
At our Intermodal Facilities
- BNSF utilizes site-specific security procedures, processes, and physical security to deliver a high degree of protection at intermodal facilities.
- At select locations, BNSF has installed automated gate systems, which match a driver's biometric fingerprint to their registered driver's license information to ensure they move the load as directed by the motor carrier.
Value-Added Security Services for Intermodal Customers
- The Strategic Transport Asset Tracking (STAT) program provides a means for the BNSF Railway Police to identify high-risk or high-value shipments moving on their territory, and thereby improve the inspection process from check-in, through transport across the BNSF network, all the way to check-out at our facility. For our container customers, BNSF also offers innovative solutions to provide a higher level of security while moving on BNSF trains. For more information on these programs please contact your Intermodal Sales Representative or call 1-800-326-5999.

As part of its continuing effort to meet customers' expectations for security, BNSF has joined the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT). C-TPAT is a cooperative endeavor between the trade community and the U.S. Customs Service to develop, enhance, and maintain effective security processes throughout the global supply chain.
U.S. Customs
U.S. Customs recognizes participating companies in C-TPAT as diligent in maintaining a secure supply chain -- as participants agree to establish policies to enhance their own security practices and those of supply chain partners. One of the requirements of a C-TPAT participant is to ensure that all areas of its supply chain -- such as documents, information systems, employee and contractor identification, equipment, and facilities-are secure.
C-TPAT
C-TPAT is a security program for the entire supply chain, and as a result, many of our customers participate in the program. Your customers may contact you with questions regarding BNSF's participation. BNSF Railway is a certified member of C-TPAT, partner identification number burRai00848.

Seal Programs
- Shipment Integrity Reporting (SIR) - This program allows BNSF customers to obtain timely information on any seal changes that occur while the shipment is in BNSF custody. Shippers have the option to request SIR reports be auto generated to any designated printer, facsimile, or Internet address. The report is generally provided within three business days.
Cable Protection
Keep your intermodal shipments out of reach from intruders every leg of the trip with the Figure 8 security cable. At little cost, this 3/16-inch high-tensile-strength steel cable quickly secures most cargo doors. Tampering is virtually impossible because the cable slips through the upper locking rods of your doors, out of reach of most thieves. At the loading dock, the cable is within reach and easily removed.
BNSF is committed to the safe transportation of hazardous materials, which is vital for the protection of our employees, customers and the communities in which we operate. Hazardous materials shipped on BNSF receive special identification and handling that includes waybill preparation, track and train list inventories, in-train placement checks, automatically updated train list entries and emergency response information. BNSF tracks all sensitive shipments. We are continually analyzing the location of cars in a train to ensure BNSF complies with all regulations.
