The Aluminum Company of East St. Louis (now Alcoa) created the Alton & Southern Railroad in 1910 to provide raw materials and coal. In the same year, the Denverside Connecting Railway Company constructed a railroad from the aluminum company to the Illinois Central on the east bank of the Mississippi River. Due to limited charters, a third company, the Alton & Southern Railway was formed in 1911 to reach St. Louis. Alcoa put the railroad up for sale in the 1960s after closing its East St. Louis plant and it was purchased by the Missouri Pacific now part of Union Pacific.
