Extending from Seward to Fairbanks, ARR operates a main line of 470 miles. Originally established in 1914, the ARR was operated by the federal government until it was purchased by the State of Alaska in 1985. ARR operates a total of 651 miles and also provides passenger rail service from the Gulf of Alaska to Fairbanks. It is the last of the full service railroads in the U.S.
